COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Vietnam War veteran Mark Davis moved into his Mercy Village duplex on Wednesday, Dec. 17 at 3601 W. Silver Springs Blvd as Saving Mercy and local veteran groups furnished his 400 sqft apartment to help him transition from homelessness, giving his new home special meaning this holiday season.  Ocala Gazette
  • Marion County officials approved the new Veterans Hall of Fame on Dec. 16 to honor local military veterans and recognize their community contributions + the nomination period remains open until Jan. 31 with an inaugural ceremony planned for March at the Southeastern Livestock Pavilion auditorium.  Ocala-News
  • Today local leaders from nonprofits, businesses, and government agencies across North Central Florida are donating gifts to benefit local families as part of their Christmas charity efforts.  WCJB

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Cultural Arts Department of Ocala launches a new rotating public art exhibit at several local venues, including the Mary Sue Rick Community Center & City Hall where visitors can view works like geometric abstraction and natural forces that are for sale while the show rotates every six months.  WCJB

ECONOMY NEWS

  • An Ocala retiree reported that after nine years in an over-55 community, HOA fees rose 30-40%-property taxes increased 10-15%-and Social Security grew only 3% annually, while declining home values may force a move to a more affordable area.  Ocala-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Marion County School Board decided that interim Superintendent Danielle Brewer will remain in her role as the long-term school leader, with new contract details to be worked out at a workshop next month (she was named interim in April).  WCJB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former Ocala Council member Mary Sue Rich passed away on Thursday, Dec. 18, at age 85. Born in Ocala and known as the first Black woman elected to the council, she served 24 years (advocating for underserved communities) and is honored by a community center at Reed Place; service details will be announced.  Ocala-News
  • The City Council unanimously approved nearly $125,000 for new electronic bleachers at the E.D. Croskey Recreation Center (NW 4th Street) Tuesday night, even as Mayor Marciano questioned the need amid programming gaps. City staff said this upgrade is part of a broader plan to boost facility use.  Ocala-News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials in Alachua and Marion counties issued rabies alerts after reporting multiple incidents with infected animals (a raccoon and stray kitten) in recent weeks. Residents are urged to avoid wild animals like raccoons, bats and coyotes and seek immediate medical care if exposed.  WCJB

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • VTR Ocala, LLC purchased The Glen at Ocala for $14.66 million. The senior living facility (6.04-acre) at 9589 SW State Road 200 offers independent living, assisted living and memory care, and is now part of the SRI Management portfolio.  Ocala-News

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Bradford girls team secured their fourth straight win by a score of 33 to 28 and the boys rebounded with a 69 to 40 victory before Xmas, while The Rock defeated Columbia 55 to 37 in home contests. These wins reflect local basketball action ahead of the holiday season.  WCJB
