COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents are invited to join the Ocala/Marion County Braver Angels Alliance meeting at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 17 at Headquarters Ocala Public Library (2720 E. Silver Springs Blvd) to promote civil discourse across political divides.  Ocala Gazette
  • The Tacachale community held its annual tree lighting ceremony this morning and offered Christmas carols, hot chocolate, and a visit from Santa Claus for local residents.  WCJB

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Buc-ee's will open a new travel center in Ocala in 2028 on a 33-acre site along NW 35th Street Road, about 1.75 miles south of W Highway 326 — the project includes highway improvements and expanded fuel and retail services, with state funds and county support already in place.  Ocala-News
  • Serendipity Boutique and the Gathering Cafe in Ocala received an anonymous donation of over $1,000 this month; both owners said the funds may help support their operations.  WCJB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • South Marion High School has chosen the Bears as its mascot with colors similar to the Chicago Bears after a survey of local fans. The new school will open in August 2026 at 1350 SW 165th Street, and a career fair is planned on March 6 to fill teaching positions.  Ocala StarBanner

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials will vote on Tuesday, Dec. 16 at 4 p.m. to approve $124,886 for new electronically retractable bleachers at the E.D. Croskey Recreation Center in west Ocala — replacing the outdated wooden seating that no longer meets accessibility standards.  Ocala-News

  • Ocala’s Guy Marwick set a world record in men's strict curl weightlifting when he lifted 90.3 pounds in his age and weight division at an event in Ashland, Virginia on Nov. 21 — the feat was sanctioned by the 100% Raw Powerlifting Federation.  Ocala Gazette
