COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Marion County unveiled its first synthetic turf fields at the Ocala Rotary Sportsplex on Thursday, Dec. 4, replacing natural grass; officials said the upgrade and planned additions (pavilion, parking lot, bleachers, and LED lights) are expected to generate millions in economic impact.  Ocala-News
  • David Keith Rubin claimed a $15 million lottery prize after winning a Gold Rush Multiplier scratch-off purchased at the Circle K on S Pine Avenue on June 18; he opted for an $8,968,000 lump-sum payout (his name became public after the 90-day confidentiality period ended in September).  Ocala-News
  • The Ocala Police Department helped the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program deliver gifts to 22 children before Christmas, adding to local nonprofit efforts to support families. Contributions may boost holiday spirit across our community.  WCJB

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A thoroughbred owners association partnered with investors to plan a new racetrack facility in Marion County as announced Dec. 9. Project details will be released soon.  WCJB
  • The new thrift store at 3930 SW 42nd Street, Suite 109 in Berkshire Oaks will hold its grand opening tomorrow. Owned by Brian and Rachel McVey, Uptown Cheapskate has been stocking inventory since October to offer local residents a place to buy, sell, or trade gently used clothing.  Ocala-News
  • Buc-ee’s will open its Ocala location in 2028 when the new I-75 interchange on Northwest 49th Street is complete — groundbreaking events for both projects are planned for late next year.  WCJB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ocala International Airport held a packed meeting Tuesday to review its updated master plan that outlines terminal expansion, a new rental car area, and the possibility of reintroducing commercial flights. City and county officials will decide future changes based on community input.  WCJB
  • Marion County Fire Rescue broke ground Tuesday at Florida State Fire College on Lowell Station 11, a new 14,000 sqft facility replacing the old 4,000 sqft station to expand emergency services in Lowell and boost ties with the fire college.  WCJB

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tuesday night, Buchholz boys basketball defeated Columbia 60+35 for a back-to-back win. Other local high school matchups in basketball and soccer produced close scores, highlighting a busy evening in our sports scene.  WCJB
