ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 41-year-old man died when his sedan left the road and hit a tree on State Road 42 near SE 258th Avenue Road in Marion County at 2:42 a.m. on Friday—this fatal crash occurred less than 12 hours after a 19-year-old motorcyclist was killed on State Road 40 in Ocala.  Ocala-News

CRIME NEWS

  • An Ocala nonprofit director, Dennis John Grundy II, was arrested last week after an audit found he altered financial documents and wrote unauthorized checks—he is accused of defrauding the organization of over $250,000 and faces charges of grand theft and organized fraud with a court appearance scheduled for Tuesday, July 22 at 9 a.m.  Ocala-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Thirty-four students earned their high school diplomas on June 18 at The Cascades through the Marion County Acceleration Academies—an alternative program that offers flexible classes to help students balance work and family duties. The free program works with Marion County Public Schools to provide online and in-person classes along with career and social support.  Ocala-News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Registration for the Florida Python Challenge is open for a 10-day hunt from July 11 at 12:01 a.m. until July 20 at 5 p.m. (officials say this event helps protect local wildlife) as hunters work to remove invasive Burmese pythons. Past records show a 19-foot snake was caught in 2023 and a 215-pound python in 2022, underlining the threat these large snakes pose.  Ocala StarBanner

  • During its fourth annual PTSD awareness walk, Marion County leaders officially proclaimed June 27 as PTSD Awareness and Teal Out Day to honor those affected by PTSD.  WCJB

HEALTH NEWS

  • On June 26th, the City of Ocala donated two vehicles (a 2010 Chevrolet bus and a 2008 Ford Expedition) to the Estella Byrd Whitman Community Health Center to help patients get to appointments. City officials and community representatives celebrated the donation during a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Ocala.  Ocala Gazette
