COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Marion County Animal Services is calling for local volunteers to join a Pack Walk at Silver Springs State Park on Sunday, June 22 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The event lets residents walk adoptable dogs along multiple loops for a $2 park entry fee and stay in the park until 5:30 p.m.  Ocala-News
  • Marion County Animal Services features three adoptable dogs—Puppy, a four-year-old who likes grass and belly rubs, Tito, a two-year-old who loves treats, and Lion, a four-year-old with movie-star looks. For June, all adoption fees are waived and the shelter is open Tuesday through Saturday for visits.  WCJB

CRIME NEWS

  • An Ocala man, Frank Adriel Romero Leandro, was indicted on charges of wire fraud and price gouging for allegedly selling fraudulent facemasks on his website between March 16, 2020 and February 10, 2021 — he misrepresented cheaper facemasks as N95s to earn over $1.2 million and could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.  Ocala-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Miss Ocala's Caroline Schapansky and Miss Gainesville's Paris Richardson will join 38 contestants in the Miss Florida Competition in Lakeland from Monday, June 23rd to Saturday, June 28th. Schapansky, a UF nursing student in her senior year appearing for the second time, and Richardson, a UF graduate and former cheerleader making her fourth appearance, will perform their talents — yodeling and acro-dance — to promote inclusion and health equity.  WCJB

  • The annual PTSD Awareness Walk will begin at 6:30 p.m. June 27 at Ocala-Marion County Veterans Memorial Park, and proceeds from T-shirt sales will benefit Veterans Helping Veterans USA, the Marion County Fire Rescue Peer Support Fund and H3 Adventures. The Marion County Board of County Commissioners proclaimed June 27 as PTSD Awareness/Teal Out Day to encourage residents to wear teal and show support for those affected by PTSD.  Ocala Gazette

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Marion County officials approved the final plans on Tuesday, June 17th for a new development of 74 single-family residences on a 10.33-acre site in Silver Spring Shores. The revised project replaces an earlier plan for 82 townhomes and offers homes with 26x100-foot lots—each with about 1.5 parking spaces—after prolonged discussions over parking and layout.  Ocala-News
