  • Renowned local farmer and cattleman D.A. Lewis Jr. passed away at 89 on May 21, leaving behind a legacy in agriculture and community mentoring—his celebration of life will be held at noon today at First Baptist Church of Ocala. He was known for pioneering peanut production and inspiring young people in farming.  Ocala Gazette

  • An Ocala woman filed a lawsuit against Walmart after a store employee dropped a cooler from a high shelf onto her leg at the Ocala location on SW 19th Avenue Road on June 8, 2023—she now claims the incident caused serious and permanent injuries along with high medical costs and ongoing pain.  Ocala-News

  • Marion County deputies arrested Ocala man Johnny Debose Jr., 40, on Saturday after he started several fires in a home and threatened to kill those inside while under the influence of drugs & faces charges of arson, aggravated assault, and battery by strangulation.  WCJB

  • Saharan dust is coming from Africa and heading toward Florida—causing hazy skies, colorful sunsets and lower air quality. The dry air may block hurricane formation by weakening storms, but later summer rains are expected to clear the dust.  FOX 35 Orlando

  • Fonda Dulce Jesus Mio, a Colombian restaurant, opened at 620 S Pine Avenue in Ocala in January and has earned rave reviews from locals with a 4.4-star average from 376 Google reviews. The restaurant offers traditional dishes and extended Saturday hours with live dancing—entertaining diners until 2 a.m.  Ocala-News

  • Homes at Emerson Pointe in northeast Ocala are now for sale, offering one- and two-story concrete block homes with smart systems, washers, dryers, quartz countertops and stainless steel appliances—amenities include a clubhouse with a pool and two dog parks, with a total of 323 homes planned when construction is complete.  Ocala-News

  • Ocala youth baseball teams have earned spots in the Cal Ripken Junior State Tournament scheduled for June 12 to June 15 in Palm Beach after finishing third in district tournaments held in Bushnell. The teams — led by coaches Todd Blankenship and Brian Fitzpatrick from the local recreational league — will represent Ocala and face other Florida squads at the state event.  Ocala-News
  • Marion County high school tennis players competed at Coedhadjoe Park in a three-day tournament that set the stage for the Star-Banner all-county girls tennis team. Madison Molock from Forest finished undefeated and Jordana Tico from West Port earned runner-up honors—Athlete of the Year winners were announced on May 27 at the MESPYs.  Ocala StarBanner
