  • Marion County opened its new Animal Services complex at 6405 W. State Road 40 in NW Ocala on May 21 — hundreds visited the facility and 10-week-old kitten Rayman charmed them with playful paws.  Ocala Gazette

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Southbound lanes on U.S. Highway 301/441 reopened on Sunday after a sinkhole forced a temporary closure at the Highway 329 intersection in Marion County as repair crews filled the gap to restore normal traffic.  Ocala-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ocala-Marion County Veterans Memorial Park hosted A Heritage Remembered Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 25, where local participants, including Wallace & Christina Read of the Marine Corps League, paid tribute by reciting the pledge of allegiance.  Ocala Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rain helped contain north central Florida wildfires over Memorial Day weekend as major fires reached 85% containment while burn bans remain in effect (officials advise residents to exercise caution until conditions improve).  WCJB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marion County officials will review today a proposal to convert a former VFW at 19241 N US Hwy 441 into an eco-friendly aquamation facility for deceased pets and small livestock + the plan includes strict wastewater controls and will move to a final ruling on June 17.  Ocala-News
  • An Ocala couple applied for a Special Use Permit to keep two miniature horses on their 1.54-acre property at 12721 SW 73rd Street, & the Marion County Planning and Zoning Commission will review the request tomorrow, May 27 at 5:30 p.m.  Ocala-News
