- ➤ A Florida Highway Patrol trooper was cleared after a struggle led to the fatal shooting of Cody Dennis at HCA Ocala (an assistant state attorney ruled the actions justified). WCJB
- ➤ A 24-year-old Ocala man whose father pastors a local church was arrested last week after he allegedly solicited an undercover detective posing as a 13-year-old girl for child pornography and requested explicit photos to prove she was not law enforcement (MCSO records indicate he is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, June 10). - ➤ A free calligraphy class will be held tomorrow, May 14, from 5 p.m.—6 p.m. at the Mary Sue Rich Community Center on NW 21st Avenue in Ocala. The class teaches creative lettering and welcomes all students—no experience is needed. Ocala-News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ An Ocala resident urged lawmakers to exempt longtime elderly homeowners from rising property taxes that could force them to lose their homes if not paid within a 10-year period—residents who have paid taxes for decades now also face added road assessments that push costs higher. Amendment 11 offers some tax relief but does not remove the stress on seniors with limited income. Ocala-News
- ➤ Florida officials said that a recent immigration operation which detained over 1,000 migrants is now the new normal — a model for federal mass deportation measures set to begin within 60 days. - ➤ The U.S. Navy will conduct live bomb-testing in the Ocala National Forest at the Pinecastle Range Complex on May 15 from 2:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. The tests resume after being paused due to severe drought and recent wildfires. Ocala-News
