ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The City of Ocala and Green For Life will host a household hazardous and electronic waste collection event on Saturday, April 25, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at NE 14th Street and NE 8th Avenue, where residents can drop off items such as paint, cleaning fluids, and outdated electronics.  Ocala-News
  • State officials say Florida needs (23–28 inches) of rain over three months to ease drought and lift burn bans after wildfires burned thousands of acres. Experts say a tropical storm may be required to trigger rain, and that dry conditions might remain until early June.  Ocala StarBanner
  • Wildfires continue across north central Florida as officials warn that the fire weather watch and red flag warning will remain until Tuesday. Evacuations were ordered in Levy County due to the Cow Creek Fire which has grown to 1,850 acres.  WCJB

HEALTH NEWS

  • Blue and silver pinwheels are displayed countywide this month as part of the Safe Kids Coalition's Pinwheel Project & supported by the Florida Department of Health to mark Child Abuse Awareness Month and prompt community members near the Ocala Police Department and other public spaces to report concerns.  WCJB
  • The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that nearly 150,000 Generac portable generators are recalled because they may leak gasoline and cause a fire risk. Residents who purchased these at Home Depot or Lowe's are urged to stop using them and contact their dealer for free repairs.  Ocala StarBanner
