  • Marion County Sheriff's Office will offer free self-defense classes for women & girls starting Jan. 13 at the MCSO Training Building at 692 NW 30th Ave with sessions held 6–9 p.m.; participants must register by emailing Cpl. Shelby Kinsey.  Ocala-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Marion Cultural Alliance marks 25 years of Horse Fever with a new horse sculpture unveiled Friday at the Brick City Center for the Arts. The event offers art activities and a raffle with $75 tickets running through Dec. 4 to support local cultural programs.  WCJB
  • Ocala accepted the 9-foot, 440-pound sculpture 'P. Ruber’s Story' as a permanent piece at Tuscawilla Park after the city council voted on Jan. 6 (it was donated by Miami-based artist Michael O’Khaen following its temporary display for the Ocala Outdoor Sculpture Competition).  Ocala-News
  • Ocala natives Vincent and Katy Alexander will appear on NBC’s The Wall on Jan. 12. The game show offers over $12 million in nightly prizes & up to $3 million on one drop and is hosted by Emmy Award winner Chris Hardwick.  Ocala Gazette

  • Sen. Nick DiCeglie filed a proposal on Friday, Jan. 9 to let the two thoroughbred tracks offer other types of gambling without holding races & the measure is similar to a bill filed last month.   • Florida residents can now purchase discounted 'Discover Disney' tickets for Walt Disney World starting Jan. 12 through May 16, with prices beginning at $64 per day plus an optional Park Hopper add-on. Proof of Florida residency is required.  Ocala StarBanner

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Drone photos by Maven Photo show that a six-story Marriott AC Hotel and a new parking garage are reshaping downtown. The $56 million hotel at 210 W Silver Springs Boulevard will finish by December while the garage with 800 spaces will complete by summer 2026 amid ongoing improvements (a sign of future growth).  Ocala-News
